Shin Megami Tensei IV - review

As the SHIN MEGAMI craze continues (SHIN MEGAMI x FIRE EMBLEM will be on WiiU soon, and PERSONA 5 is coming to PS4 and PS3 etc) we revisit a recent classic... SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI IV on 3DS...

SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI IV (SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI 4) - the American cover for the 3DS game.Format: 3DS

Shin Megami Tensei IV is the 2013 JRPG classic from ATLUS featuring a group of young teenage wanabe samurais, set in the post-apocalyptic future setting of Mikado, with elements of both Victorian and Medieval Japan. You take on the role of Flyn and set out at the start to join a cast of Samurais in Mikado.

Throughout the story based game you will fight demons and go on many quests.

The game has you starting in the city of Mikado where you are enlisting into a Samurai school and given a special hi-tech gauntlet which houses many useful apps and a rather sexy AI character 'Burroughs' who provides Flyn with a lot of support, information and apps throughout the missions.

Buroughs the Gauntlets AI and your helpful smart companion in this adventure...I won't spoil the story as it has a good one, if you like your usual anime teenagers in danger JRPG stuff.

The battles are turn based and are quite fun and it's not too difficult once you work out the gameplay -The gameplay has you fight demons and also get into conversation with them to convince them to become your ally and add them to your team.

There are also demon fusions, where you can fuse demons that you have collected and make them into newer more powerful demons.  I love JRPGs and RPGs what I also love most is a good story and great graphics and sound presentation.

Shin Megami Tensei IV has a fantastic range of characters and collectable demons which will keep you glued to this game...SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI IV is a superb experience, it could however be improved in some areas - while the graphics are very nice there are areas where they could have been sharpened up and neater.

The sound design and effects are fantastic all the way through, completely atmospheric and they really imerse you into the atmosphere. The voice acting is also very cool and each of the actors really portray their characters well in this game.

The SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI IV storyline is very exciting and the characters are really cool. The twists in the story really keep you on your toes and have you wondering what's going to happen next.

Shin Megami Tensei IV has an excellent storyline which will keep you interested through the game...

As a game review for Nintendoing I feel SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI IV on 3DS is a fantastic experience and I enjoy this game more than PERSONA Q: SHADOW oF THE LABYRINTH. There are areas where it could have been improved further, for example I would have loved more animation in the cut scenes, most of which are just images moved around (I would have loved the cut scenes to have been at the level of something like PERSONA 4 GOLDEN on PS VITA).

The engrossing scenes at the start of Shin Megami Tensei 4 where Flyn gets initiated into the samurai clan by Gauntlet! However the issues I mentioned are only minor niggles which don't ruin the overal gaming experience.  This is gaming gold.

SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI IV is a great gaming experience and one that is totally addictive and a must buy for fans of the series and genre.
