At a media event this Tuesday (17th March 2015) Nintendo's Satoru Iwata announced that Nintendo is soon to be involved in smartphone games production, and a new on-line service is coming from Nintendo aswell as the development of a new console called NX...
If you think that means a load of old classic Nintendo games like Super Mario World on your smartphone, then that's not correct; more likely it means Nintendo characters appearing in games specifically developed for your smartphone os.
Nintendo will be developing these services with a company called DeNA who are well known for their mobile software and services such as Manga Box and Chirashiru.
However Nintendo is not bailing out of the console market - There will be new consoles coming from Nintendo. Nintendo's Satoru Iwata announced the following...
"As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename 'NX,'" he said. "It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year."
Hold your breath, Nintendo is not abandoning the WiiU as some reports claim - Support for the console is going to grow stronger with the new on-line service which will unify WiiU, 3DS, PC, Mobile and NX gaming with one online service featuring access to games for all of them.
The new NX console or NX gaming platform may not reach us till 2017 or even later, as it is still in development (not production) also the WiiU is growing strong after last years release of big games MARIO KART 8 and Super Smash Bros - And this year will see the release of strong WiiU console selling titles such as THE LEGEND OF ZELDA, STAR FOX and XENOBLADE CHRONICLES X. Iwata has only said he will be sharing information of NX next year not the release of NX.
Iwata said the following... "Nintendo, together with DeNA, will jointly develop a new membership service which encompasses the existing Nintendo 3DS and Wii U systems, the new hardware system with a brand-new concept, NX, and smart devices and PCs, and Nintendo will be the primary party to operate this new membership service. Unlike the Club Nintendo membership service that Nintendo has been operating, the new membership service will include multiple devices and create a connection between Nintendo and each individual consumer regardless of the device the consumer uses. This membership will form one of the core elements of the new Nintendo platform that I just mentioned."
The excitement is growing already, even though the NX is still a concept; Australian retailer EB GAMES has already started taking pre-orders for it, such is the popularity of Nintendo consoles.
